Because figuring out how search engines decide what to prioritize in search rankings can be so lucrative, people are always trying to guess where these trends are headed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google is once again making changes to its search algorithm for 2021. Here\u2019s what you need to know to prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google has always prioritized user experience in determining search result relevance. In the past, they\u2019ve made it clear that they would prioritize pages where text begins above the fold, as well as considering mobile optimization and page load speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Google has put out even more detailed documentation for the changes coming in 2021, and how web developers can prepare for them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, Google will consider what it calls<a href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/vitals\/#core-web-vitals\"> Core Web Vitals<\/a>, a series user-centered metrics that quantify key aspects of the user experience, based on the parameters of loading, interactivity, and visual stability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Developers should pay attention to:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/lcp\/\">Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)<\/a>: measures loading performance. To provide a good user experience, LCP should occur within 2.5 seconds of when the page first starts loading.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/fid\/\">First Input Delay (FID)<\/a>: measures interactivity. To provide a good user experience, pages should have a FID of less than 100 milliseconds.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/cls\/\">Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)<\/a>: measures visual stability. To provide a good user experience, pages should maintain a CLS of less than 0.1.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For each of the above metrics, to ensure you&#8217;re within the recommended range for most of your users, a good threshold to measure is the 75th percentile of page loads, segmented across mobile and desktop devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canspace.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/canspace-solutions-whats-news-for-seo-in-2021-105.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.canspace.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/canspace-solutions-whats-news-for-seo-in-2021-105.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.canspace.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/canspace-solutions-whats-news-for-seo-in-2021-105.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.canspace.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/canspace-solutions-whats-news-for-seo-in-2021-105-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.canspace.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/canspace-solutions-whats-news-for-seo-in-2021-105-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.canspace.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/canspace-solutions-whats-news-for-seo-in-2021-105-740x370.png 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In addition to these, Google will take into consideration:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2015\/02\/finding-more-mobile-friendly-search.html\">Mobile-friendliness<\/a> &#8211; now that mobile devices have outpaced all others, Google will prioritize pages that work well on mobile. To test some pages from your site, you can use Google\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/mobile-friendly\/?utm_source=wmc-blog&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=mobile-friendly\"><br>Mobile-Friendly Test<\/a>. For a more thorough report on the mobile-friendliness of your site, you can use your Google Webmaster account to run a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/mobile-usability?utm_source=wmc-blog&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=mobile-friendly\"> Mobile Usability Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2016\/09\/more-safe-browsing-help-for-webmasters.html\">Safe browsing<\/a> &#8211; Google looks for six security issues by its Safe Browsing module, including <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/webmasters\/hacked\/\">malware<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6350487\"> deceptive pages<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/3258249\"> harmful downloads<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/3258249#if_uncommon\">uncommon downloads<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2016\/11\/heres-to-more-https-on-web.html\">HTTPS security<\/a> &#8211; the most straightforward of the new guidelines, since websites either have HTTPS security or not.
