Here’s what actually matters for your site.

cPanel v134 is rolling out across the hosting industry this month, and it changes more than the version number lets on. It drops support for a couple of server operating systems, removes some tools developers rely on, and ships current PHP while older versions age out of support. Most of it happens behind the scenes, but one piece has a direct bearing on your site’s security and speed, and it is worth five minutes this week.

Here is what actually changes in v134, starting with the part that matters most.

Old PHP just got riskier

PHP is the language most websites run on, WordPress included, and it ships in versions that reach end of life on a fixed schedule. Once a version hits that date, it stops receiving security patches. Running a site on an end-of-life PHP version is one of the most common and most avoidable security exposures we see, and a control-panel update is a good reason to find out where you stand.

Here is the state of play as of mid-2026:

PHP 8.1 reached end of life on December 31, 2025. It no longer receives security fixes.

PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on December 31, 2026. It is currently on security-only updates.

PHP 8.3 is supported through the end of 2027.

PHP 8.4 is the current recommended version for production and is supported into 2028.

If your site is on PHP 8.1 or older, it is running on an unsupported version right now. If it is on 8.2, it has until the end of this year. Beyond security, newer PHP versions are meaningfully faster, so moving up is usually a free performance gain as well as a security one.

The catch is that you cannot always just flip the switch. An older WordPress theme or plugin, or a custom application, can break on a newer PHP version. That is the real work: confirming your site is compatible before moving it up. On our hosting we handle the version change and help sort out compatibility issues when a client asks, and the cPanel upgrade itself is ours to manage, so you do not lift a finger for it.

And if your site genuinely cannot move off an older version yet, that does not mean running it exposed. For clients in that position, we provide security-hardened builds of end-of-life PHP, so the site keeps receiving security patches while you plan the move to a current version. On our platform, an aging PHP version is not something you have to lose sleep over either way.

Tools and interfaces that changed

A few things you interact with directly are different in v134:

Composer is no longer bundled. cPanel used to ship a copy of Composer, the PHP dependency manager. It no longer does. If you are a developer who relies on it, you can install your own copy inside your account, and any copy you already installed keeps working.

Site Publisher is gone. The basic one-page-site builder that shipped inside cPanel has been removed entirely. Anyone building a real site is on WordPress or a proper site builder anyway.

Settings consolidated. Language, password, and contact preferences now live together in one Account Preferences screen instead of being scattered across separate pages.

Under the hood, v134 also adds Denial-of-Service protection for the calendar and contacts (CalDAV/CardDAV) services and support for the newer CloudLinux 10 operating system. Neither is something a site owner touches, but both are the kind of quiet hardening a major version is actually for.

The operating-system shuffle

v134 drops support for Rocky Linux and older Ubuntu while continuing to support AlmaLinux. This is invisible to site owners, but it matters for whoever runs your server. Our fleet runs on AlmaLinux, which cPanel continues to support, so there is no scramble on our end to migrate servers off a suddenly-unsupported operating system. If your current host is quietly rebuilding servers this quarter to get off Rocky Linux, that is the kind of work that should never reach you as a customer.

The one thing to do this week

Check what version of PHP your site runs on. In cPanel it is under MultiPHP Manager; if you are not sure, ask your host. If the answer is 8.1 or older, plan to move up soon. If you are on our hosting and want a hand confirming your site is compatible and getting it onto a current version, that is exactly the kind of thing our support team does. The version number on your control panel changing in the background is nothing to worry about. A website quietly running on PHP that stopped getting security updates months ago is worth fixing.

Full disclosure, since this is a hosting provider’s blog: we’re CanSpace, a Canadian-incorporated company with all data centers in Canada and Canadian-staffed support. We run cPanel across our fleet, handle major version upgrades like v134 for our clients, and keep sites on current, supported PHP versions as part of managing the account rather than as an add-on.

If you want to see how we handle the day-to-day, our hosting plans cover shared hosting with PHP management included, our VPS and dedicated server pages cover the fully managed higher tiers, and you can always send us a question about your current PHP version or an upcoming migration.

cPanel v134 is rolling out across the hosting industry this month, and it changes more than the version number lets on.
