Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
My name is Ryan Wood, and I live in Saskatchewan, Canada. Professionally, I work in the non-profit sector, but outside of work one of my biggest passions is aviation, particularly gliding and soaring. I serve as Treasurer and an Instructor with the Prince Albert Gliding and Soaring Club (PAGSC). I’ve always been fascinated by flight, weather, and the challenge of mastering complex skills. Gliding combines all of those interests into an activity that is both intellectually engaging and incredibly rewarding.
Tell us about PAGSC and its mission.
The Prince Albert Gliding and Soaring Club (PAGSC) is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to promoting the sport of soaring and making gliding accessible to people throughout Saskatchewan and beyond. Our mission is to provide safe, affordable, and rewarding flying opportunities while fostering a community built around learning, mentorship, and a shared passion for aviation.
Through flight training, introductory flights, and ongoing support for pilots at all levels, PAGSC helps people experience one of the purest forms of flight. We aim to inspire the next generation of aviators while helping members develop skills in aerodynamics, weather interpretation, decision-making, and aircraft operation.
What is the one thing that most people do not realize (or find the most surprising) about gliding?
The biggest surprise for most people is that gliders can stay airborne for hours and travel hundreds of kilometres without an engine. Many assume that once the initial tow is over, the flight is simply a slow descent back to earth. In reality, glider pilots use rising air currents created by the sun, terrain, and weather systems to gain altitude and travel great distances.
Experienced pilots can spend an entire afternoon in the air and cover hundreds of kilometres using nothing but atmospheric energy. In many ways, soaring is more like sailing than conventional aviation. You’re constantly reading the environment and using nature’s energy to carry you forward.
Why and how did you get into this field? What’s the best thing about it?
Like many pilots, I’ve been fascinated by aviation for as long as I can remember. What drew me specifically to gliding was the unique combination of challenge, skill, and connection to the natural world. The idea that you could stay aloft and travel significant distances without an engine seemed almost unbelievable until I experienced it for myself.
What keeps me coming back is that every flight is different. No two days have the same weather conditions, and every flight presents a new puzzle to solve. There is something incredibly satisfying about finding rising air, climbing thousands of feet, and navigating across the landscape using skill and knowledge rather than horsepower. It’s a sport that rewards curiosity, patience, and continuous learning.
What does it take to be successful at it?
Successful glider pilots are lifelong learners. Technical flying skills are important, but so are judgment, discipline, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. A strong understanding of weather is essential because the atmosphere is effectively your engine.
Patience and persistence also matter. Progress comes through experience, and every flight offers lessons that help make you a better pilot. The most successful pilots are the ones who remain curious, continue learning, and never stop refining their decision-making skills.
