Tell us a little about yourself and where you’re located
Mathieson’s Photo Services was founded in 1948 in Calgary’s downtown core and later became Mathieson & Hewitt Photographers. We have been the primary studio for professional headshots and corporate photography in Calgary for many years.
What does Mathieson & Hewitt do?
Our mission is to offer high end and premium photography services that our clients can proudly use to represent their businesses, families, and events. Our team of photographers and retouch artists represent decades of experience to guarantee our clients leave with the best quality images. That’s why we do all our photography and retouching in-house.
Why and how did you get into this line of work? What’s the best thing about it?
The best part of what we do is the creative aspect. We got into photography with a background in visual arts and have always been passionate about creativity and storytelling through images. We were fortunate to be mentored at this studio by photographers with more experience in the past. We developed our skills and grew as photographers here. What started as a shared passion naturally evolved into a career path, allowing us to turn our artistic strengths into something meaningful for others.
What shoots are among the most challenging that not many photographers take on?
For many photographers, the most challenging shoots are those that rely heavily on professional studio lighting as these require more technical knowledge. Unlike natural light photography, lights, modifiers, and angles must all be taken into consideration and intentionally controlled. Often photographers will rely on natural light for this reason. Our focus, however, is on professional studio photography.
What projects are among your favorites and those you are most proud of?
Some of our favorite and most rewarding projects came out of the pandemic. With traditional productions on pause, our team used the opportunity to step outside our usual workflow and experiment with creative concepts and photography techniques that we don’t often get to explore in day-to-day client work. Looking back, we’re especially proud of additions to our artistic collection.
What does it take to be successful at what you do?
We’re dedicated to providing the highest quality photographs as well as to our customers. That is why we have clients who have trusted us with capturing milestones along their career path or family events over the decades. We always work with our clients to meet their goals whenever possible. Whether that means accommodating a unique request or adjusting our availability, we endeavor to go the extra mile to ensure everyone receives the service they’re looking for.
