Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
Co-Founder and CEO, Dan Ruegg, brings two decades of experience in leadership, communications, technology, and cybersecurity from his tenure in the Canadian tech industry. An alum of Humber College, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College, Dan currently lives in Halifax NS which is host to thriving Ocean Economy where these is a wonderful support network for Ocean Tech companies such as EcoMarine Technologies.
What is EcoMarine Technologies?
EcoMarine is at the forefront of revolutionizing maritime maintenance with its cutting-edge Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) system, designed for in-water cleaning of various types of underwater surfaces including ship hulls, dam structures, offshore energy platforms, and commercial fishing pens. Our flagship product design integrates advanced underwater movement capabilities, a cavitating jet cleaning system, and waste capture and filtration systems. Combined with underwater positioning and autonomous navigation features, this innovative technology ensures efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solutions to several expensive, dangerous and hard-to-tackle issues in the marine industry, such as the persistent issues of biofouling, invasive species and vessel structure fatigue*.*
When and how was the idea of building a drone utilizing AI born? How long and what was the process of building something brand new like?
During the early part of the pandemic and seeing all of the vessels sitting in ports around the world, I started thinking “they could be doing something productive while all these ships are just sitting there”. Combining this line of thought with a growing awareness of the still emerging unmanned surface vehicles (USV)/unmanned autonomous vehicle (UAV) ocean tech sectors – it was a natural conclusion that there ought to be a vehicle that is able to go out to these ships and cleans and inspects their hulls.
What’s the best part about your job?
I am working on something I truly believe in and the learning never stops.
What does it take to be successful at what you do?
Dedication and a creative approach to problem solving. When you are working for a technology start up, there is no end to the bumps you encounter along the road to success. While you need to continue to persist, many times you need to re-invent your approach – both to operating your business, and to developing your technology.

For EcoMarine Technologies not being a large company, we need to handle a lot of the backroom operations ourselves – such as website building and maintenance.
