I read reviews upon reviews, and settled on CanSpace because of the positive and great reviews. The tech support group [is] so quick, that I could leave my desk after pressing ‘send‘ on a question and by the time I get back from pouring my coffee, the answer is there!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
I am an Interior Designer based out of Toronto, with east coast roots. I couldn’t find an Interior Design program in Nova Scotia at that time, so I knew I had to move to study. As a ‘mature’ student, I decided on a private college in Toronto offering a fast track option where you didn’t have to take summers off. I was more interested in getting the schooling out of the way, excited to start my career. I thought I would move back to Halifax after the 3 years, but I loved being in the big city so decided to stay. 2024 will mark my 20th year in Toronto!
When I’m not working, I’m with my year and a half old pup, Radar. He is my first dog, and apparently, I needed a challenge for my first one… he’s a Cane Corso and German Shepherd mix. He’s 100lbs of sweet and silly goodness. It’s been so fun to learn about dogs behaviours and the ups and downs of training.
I also use my spare time for my hobbies such as Reading, Rug Tufting, and practicing drums. I love all types of music; my favourite being oldies 50’s and 60’s, but I play garage rock and punk rock songs. I jam with my husband and in another band with a few girlfriends. My goal with Rug Tufting is to be able to eventually design and make large scale rugs. My designs tend to lean towards a composition of organic abstract shapes using bright vibrant colours, depending on what colours of yarn are available at that time. My evening always ends with reading as much as I can of a book! I look forward to that time immensely. One of my favourite authors is Haruki Murakami.
What is Roxann Interior Design?
Roxann Interior Design is an interiors studio driven by form, function, aesthetic harmony and client adaptation. We find beauty in incorporating natural materials, purpose in visual economy, and authenticity in imperfection. Along with a strong understanding and respect for collaboration, our edited approach strives to create spaces that, above all, communicate a human experience.
It’s important to me that working with an interior designer should not be out of reach, and should be a joyful exploratory experience. Most often the people that reach out to me have a love for design and aesthetics; they know what they want but need help to bring their ideas together in a cohesive package and want us to implement it. The other half have no idea what they want, but know they need help. I love these clients just as much, because I thoroughly enjoy the evolution of their authentic self come out through the discovery period!
Why and how did you get into this line of business? What’s the best thing about it?
I was always creative and loved drawing and sketching, but after graduating high school I attended some university classes then went on to business school to learn how to start and open a business, all to figure out what I wanted to focus on. Trading spaces on HGTV became popular around that time and I really enjoyed the creativity and possibilities they showcased. I sat in on a local decorating class and spoke to the teacher afterward and she suggested Interior Design. I knew I didn’t want to focus solely on decorating, and I also didn’t want to be an Architect, but being an “Interior Architect” appealed to me. After more research and career options, Interior Design was exactly what I wanted to pursue.
As I mentioned above, the best thing about my job is bringing out the clients authentic self. Whether it’s a residential kitchen, a retail shop or a restaurant… it is so rewarding creating environments that people can live, play, and work in!
What does it take to be great at what you do?
Many people don’t realize that an Interior Designer differs from an Interior Decorator. Although we do focus on décor, Interior Design is much more than just aesthetics. Interior Designers help clients realize their goals, creating environments which are both functional and beautiful. An important part of the job is being collaborative; we consider your vision, your lifestyle, and your budget.
Much like an Architect, Interior designers have to be Qualified through a rigorous process of education, experience, and examination. In order to call yourself an Interior Designer in Ontario, you have to be a member of the Association of Registered Interior Designer of Ontario (ARIDO). Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability. ARIDO Registered and Intern members are also required to carry professional liability insurance, participate in the ongoing professional development, and uphold a professional code of ethics and standards of practice.
Along with having a good handle on the technical skillset, it really helps to have the ability to connect and communicate well with your clients. Interpersonal skills are also beneficial when you are the prime consultant on a large project that has many moving parts, individuals, and groups involved.
