Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
I am Klaus, the founder of Lignum Design Ltd. (https://lignum-design.net) I also work as a designer on residential Timberframe buildings and commercial Mass Timber structures. With 31 years of experience in the timber industry, I am passionate about providing suitable details which are not only easy to install but also cost efficient.
I started my apprenticeship as a timberframer at the age of 16, and worked several years on site and as a CNC operator. After several years of working on site and in the shop, I expanded my knowledge in civil engineering and have since then stayed in the timber industry. In 2006, I moved to Canada to learn more about traditional Timberframe building design. After working several years for a Timberframe company, I decided to step up and founded Lignum Design.
When I am not at work, I enjoy the outdoors with my family, especially camping, fishing, hiking and mountain biking. My favorite spot is New Denver on Slocan Lake.
What is Lignum Design?
We are specialized in DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) on Timberframe and Mass Timber projects. Located in Golden, BC, we also do house plans for residential projects. Our principal values are that we stay on schedule and budget. Producing great design for the client and making things simple for the team on site.
Our slogan is: wood is the material of the future. It’s light, strong, green and sexy.
Why and how did you get into this line of work? What’s the best thing about it?
It started when I did an apprenticeship as a carpenter because I liked working with wood, and I stayed in this field since. The two best things about our work: designing structures which will be built and seeing the pictures once the components are installed.
What does it take to be great at what you do?
It helps to have done apprenticeship as I have, as well as having worked for several years on site to understand how timber structures get installed.
As I bring over 30 years of experience in this field, you understand right away the required details and you know what works and what doesn’t.
