Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor in North Vancouver, BC, the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples. I have been a counsellor for over twenty years, working mainly with children, youth and families. I love what I do and feel very privileged to support families. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family in the forests and on the water of coastal BC.
What is Compassionate Parenting?
Compassionate Parenting (https://compassionateparenting.ca) is the name of my private practice. My intention is to support caregivers in parenting with compassion for their children and themselves. Parenting can be joyful; it can also be hard and humbling. I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for caregivers to explore challenging issues and move towards greater wellbeing.
Why did you get into this line of work, and this particular segment of counselling? What’s the best thing about it?
I initially was in the field of recreation working as a youth coordinator at a local community centre. I found I wanted to engage with families more closely and decided to go back to school for my Masters in Counselling Psychology. Counselling children, youth and families combined my experience in recreation and my new career path as a therapist. The best thing about working with families is helping them work through challenges together and come to new understandings.
What does it mean to be successful at what you do?
To me, being a counsellor means understanding that we are all human and we all struggle sometimes. Counselling means holding space for people and families to gently work through their challenges and being there to celebrate their joy along the way.
How does CanSpace solve the objectives you have for your website?
CanSpace is a Canadian company, which I really appreciate. Building a website was completely new and overwhelming to me. The CanSpace website was easy to navigate and the staff were quick to answer my questions. They continue to respond quickly when I need help troubleshooting something on my website.
