Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
Spiderlodge Music School resides at the foot of Little Mountain in Chilliwack, BC, about an hour’s drive east of Vancouver.
My partner Rick Genge is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/engineer/producer and I am a singer/songwriter and vocal coach. We’re celebrating our 20th year of serving our clients in 2025, having taught hundreds of students of all ages over the years, and producing fifteen albums so far, some of which are our own original music compilations, available on iTunes and Spotify as well as other streaming platforms. I also have a book available on Amazon for adults who enjoy singing but fear it’s too late to improve. It’s never too late to learn to play and sing!
I enjoy dog walking and birding. I also collect vintage children’s books and handmade embroidery. I spent many years in the St John Ambulance Therapy Dog program visiting seniors homes each week, until my dogs and I aged out. 🙂
What is Spiderlodge?
At Spiderlodge (https://spiderlodge.ca/), we help others learn to play a variety of instruments, and have fun in the process so they enjoy making music for life! We believe in the power of music to provide a ‘flow’ experience which is not only cathartic but also allows for self-expression and creativity through both performance and songwriting, though neither of these pursuits are required to play and sing songs you love, on your own or with other musicians.
Why and how did you get into this line of business? What’s the best thing about it?
Rick and I were travelling musicians back when bands could make a living touring Canada’s nightclubs and dancehalls (the ’80’s & ’90’s) and as songwriters, we aspired to build our own home recording studio. By the time we entered the new Millennium, we were in a position to produce airplay quality recordings and to teach students of all ages and levels of capability. The best thing about having our own studio and a permanent place set up and play is never having to sleep on the floor of the van again. 🙂
What does it take to be successful at what you do?
We’ve learned how to balance dedication to our own musical creativity with devoting time and energy necessary to assist others. By scheduling ourselves to make time for our own recording projects in between teaching semesters, we’ve kept up our enthusiasm for both endeavours, and we’ve discovered how each opportunity beautifully inspires the other.
