Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.
I’m an accident of history, the result of highly improbable fusion of gametes. I had no input into either the timing (sometime in Era of the Anthropocene) or a place (Namibia) for this miracle to occur, but I am very happy with the result. A subsequent series of dubious choices and a few lucky breaks means I am now a writer and editor (https://www.midgley.ca) living in Edmonton, Canada.
Tell us about your work and what inspired you to pursue a career in writing and editing.
I was barely walking when an acquaintance of my mother’s declared: that boy has potlood-ore (pencil ears), that is to say, ears big and wide enough to act as a quill stand. That settled it: I knew then that I would one day work with words. The equipment was built into me. Language and how we can use it to impart meaning and intent, or wield power through it, remains endlessly fascinating. Every time I write or edit, I am aware that I am helping to shape how we see the world—what could be better than that?
What is the best thing about it?
Every manuscript takes me into new worlds and demands different skills. Whether I’m creating worlds from scratch or shaping them for someone else, I’m constantly travelling, discovering new things, and finding new ways to tackle problems.
What does it take to be successful at what you do?
Editing requires creativity and an eye for detail, among many other things. You need creativity to suggested pathways for dealing with dilemmas writers face, but you also need an eye that can spot detail—those small inconsistencies that will bug readers. Then you fix them. But at the same time, you should never forget that editing is a business. If you don’t look after the business aspects, like putting effort into your website and marketing, you won’t succeed, no matter how talented you are.
