What is Google Workspace and Should You Use it?

The last year created an unprecedented move to remote work that would have been unimaginable under different circumstances. Companies like Zoom made the best of this new environment, providing a necessary service to millions of new remote workers.

Google has also stepped up their presence in the world of remote work solutions, with their new Google Workspace. Billed as “everything you need to get anything done, now in one place”, Google’s Workspace combines familiar apps like Gmail, Drive, Sheets, and Slides, into a more seamless work-ready online environment.

One way to think about Google Workspace is as the new Google G-Suite, the service launched in 2006 that enabled companies to run Google’s extremely popular apps like Gmail and Drive on their own domains, available to their entire staff. This was a paid service, and Google Workspace is too.

Some newer features include the ability to mention or tag in users with @, live preview of files without having to actually open them, and picture-in-picture video conferencing available right in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

As far as the pricing goes, though, Google Workspace is very affordable, with pricing plans $6/user/month and going up from there. The most popular, Business Standard plan costs $12/user/month, and includes:

  • Custom and secure business email
  • 150 participant video meetings + recording
  • 2 TB cloud storage per user
  • Security and management controls
  • Standard Support (paid upgrade to Enhanced Support)
