Jocelyn Mann, Founder and CEO, SolAcademics

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are located.

I am Jocelyn Mann, the founder and CEO of SolAcademics. I am from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, where I graduated from The University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Education in 2010, majoring in Kinesiology and Physical Education. I spent a good amount of time working in both Canadian and international education systems, both public and private. As I am always in the pursuit of making a difference in children’s lives and providing meaningful education, I decided to follow my passion and embark on a new adventure by launching and creating SolAcademics in 2020.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time outside in nature, leading an active lifestyle. Surfing, running, travelling, spending time with my family and 10 nieces and nephews, completing professional development courses/classes, spending time at our family cabin. I am also into sewing and macrame.

What is SolAcademics?

SolAcademics (https://solacademics.com/) is dedicated to helping all children, regardless of their abilities, succeed by creating innovative and creative lessons, via individual or small group instruction. We believe this approach enhances engagement, focus and promotes a positive learning environment. Our mission is to help students reach their full potential in all aspects of life, become active contributors in their community and catalysts for change in the world, and we ensure this by providing engaging lessons, relevant assignments and meaningful assessments on a personal level. Our hope as educators is to pass the love and passion for lifelong learning, growing and development to our students.

What are the key advantages to homeschooling versus traditional schooling?

Homeschooling offers several key advantages over traditional schooling, including personalized learning tailored to individual student needs, flexibility in scheduling and curriculum, the ability to create a conducive learning environment, closer family relationships, and the opportunity for students to pursue their passions and interests at their own pace. Additionally, homeschooling often allows for more focused attention on academics, as well as opportunities for experiential learning and field trips that can enhance educational experiences beyond the classroom.

Why and how did you get into this line of work? What’s the best thing about it?

My story began as a student inspired by my teachers who helped children reach their full potential. I was brought up to cultivate and share my love of learning, which led me to become an educator, aiming to help children succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. I strongly believe in a holistic approach to education that enables students to become knowledgeable and enlightened citizens of the world.

After graduating from the College of Education in 2010, I embarked on a 3-month journey to Southeast Asia, where I witnessed children’s lack of access to formal education. It shook my core as an educator and I knew I had to do something. I returned home determined to provide students worldwide access to rich and meaningful education. So, I began my career as a middle-school teacher with the Saskatoon Public School Division. It allowed me to grow as a teacher and develop my philosophy and standards for education. However, still wanting to reach and help more students around the world, I decided to take a leave of absence to pursue my dream of teaching abroad, in Costa Rica.

The best thing about my job is making a difference in children’s lives by helping them realize their full potential.

What does it take to be successful at what you do?

To be successful as a teacher entrepreneur, it requires a blend of pedagogical expertise, business acumen, and innovation. As a teacher entrepreneur, one must effectively balance the demands of education with the challenges of entrepreneurship, continually seeking opportunities to create value for students, educators, and the community. This involves identifying unmet needs, developing unique solutions, and leveraging technology and networking to scale impact and profitability. Adaptability, resilience, and a passion for both teaching and entrepreneurship are also crucial traits for success in this dynamic and rewarding field.
